Atari Forum down - The horror continues

February 27, 2005 by ST Graveyard

News illustration image After the great news of the new game release Cops and Robbers Chess, it's sadly time for some negative news. Atari Forum seems to be down since yesterday. We have contacted Richard Davey (author of The Little Green Desktop) about it, he contacted the hosting company, and this is what they had to say :

In compliance with our General Terms and Conditions, your dedicated server has, temporarily we hope, been suspended. Your server was experiencing an abnormal activity, which led us to suspend it for security reasons.

That is all we got for now, but we'll certainly keep you posted on this matter. The forum will be back, as usual. I just wonder what the problem is this time.

Just wanted you all to know. Until we have nailed this one down, you can hang out at http://atarilegend.com/pbpBB/ would you wish.

Cops and Robbers Chess: one more game finished!

February 26, 2005 by Brume

News illustration image Scott brothers coded at the beginning of the 90's a lot of games under the label Outland Quest Software for 8 and 16 bit Atari computers. You probably noticed them if you took a look at various PD compilations (please note: one of the games was even sold commercially by JV Entreprises). But... one of their projects was never finished because Scott Brothers stopped programming for the Atari. It stayed an unreleased game, just one screenshot was available on their website, such a shame!
Kevin pulled it up recently and discovered that it was actually about 95% done. After both weeks of finalization, Cops and Robbers Chess is just coming to be released officially!
Here is what Kevin wrote about the game:

It really is a cool game. It's two player only (sorry no computer player) but the object of the game is to push the other players either off the building or down the skylight in the middle. You get two moves per turn and you can either move to an adjoining square, push a player, ride the exhaust fans (The red squares), or cause lightning to strike from the clouds. If you push another player it pushes him up to 4 or 5 spaces but it also pushes you in the opposite direction one space. So you can't push another player if you are on the edge or near the skylight (unless you want to sacrifice a man). However if there is a cloud behind you then you are protected from falling off. The reverse side is that the other player can use the clouds to strike you with lightning if you are in the square where the cloud is (the clouds move throughout the game). Also you can ride the exhaust fans which can move you more than one square across the board but are kinda hard to control and could cause you to end up in the skylight yourself.

The game is fun to play (but keep in mind to need to find a second player). Just take a look at the new page about this game in our database. Grab it directly from our site but don't forget to visit the Outland Quest Software site to watch at more details about Kevin and Larry's releases.

ym rockerz releases a demo in 2005

February 24, 2005 by Brume

News illustration image All melomaniac will probably like the new production by ym rockerz. But also oldschool lovers and gamers, because this time the team don't publish a demo... but a game! ym rockerz, which is collective band of composers, has indeed coded a full game named tYMewarp with 10 new musics on it!
Exocet drawn the graphics of the game. And the biggest names of the scene composed the tunes. People involving the tunes are: 505, Dma-sc, Timbral, Lotek Style, Nemo, Gwem, Bodenstaendig 2000, Tao, Beast and Crazy Q!
We are a bit late on this announce. Sorry, we saw it some days ago on irc, but we forgot to post it (we're still busy with the game database and other projects). Better late that never ;-)

For users of emulators and/or real ST machines, we provide a .MSA version. Of course, feel free to visit the ym rockerz website to grab the filed version of tymewarp.

16x16 sprite record beaten!

February 19, 2005 by Brume

News illustration image November 2004: the famous contest organized by Leonard was over. The main coder of Oxygene managed to display 268 sprites on the screen (see the 16x16 sprite record page for the complete story).
February 2005: the record is beaten with one sprite more! Scum Of The Earth spread a new screen with 269 sprites on it. We had a short discussion with Leonard, this demo doesn't seem to be a fake like some previous one by other coders. This is a real thing! Brillant job.

So go on. Download the new 269 sprites screen by Scum Of The Earth and discuss about it on the forum.

Next the game is turned into a shoot 'em up very much in the vain of Xenon 2. The Lotus has gone aquatic and at a pretty slow pace you must fight your way through divers and other submarines. This is a hard level. Make sure to get the upgrades scattered around the level. Things like side shots, torpedos and laser beams are a must to progress.

Did you know?

What does ST stand for? Some people believe it is an abbreviation of "Sam Tramiel", head of Atari. Others say it is short for "16 32", cause the ST was the first in a line of 16 - 32 bit computers by Atari!
