RIP: The Rochdale Balrog

June 2, 2021 by muguk

It was announced on Twitter earlier today that John Wilson, also known by his pen name of 'The Rochdale Balrog', had passed away in his sleep on the 31st May 2021.

John was a much recognised figure within the Interactive Fiction community. Starting out in the 1980s, he and other adventure creators, released lots and lots of text adventures on the old 8-bit systems through John's label, Zenobi Software.

We were also lucky to have a number of their ported from the 8-bit to our 16-bit system mostly via STAC.

He will be greatly missed amongst those fans of the "LOOK NORTH", "GET TORCH" era as well as those who are using modern tools like PunyInform to create modern variants of the classic text adventure.

Indeed, John also ventured down this path in his later years and I will find and acquire the latest versions that he did for the Atari ST and get them uploaded onto Atari Legend as soon as I can.

You will notice a new button in the top bar called 'Menus'. This will lead you to the main menus page. You will also see a big difference in the game detail pages, as now a list of all menudisks, that contain the specific game, is displayed.

All menudisks are available for download in the AL database and all games are directly linked.

Random review

This is a difficult game, definitely NOT for the unexperienced adventure gamer. Many items are hard to find, and many puzzles are very hard to solve. Oh, and by the way, Rosella has a wicked tendency to die very often.

Did you know?

In the mid 80's Atari was approached by a company called Nintendo. They asked if Atari was interested in distributing their new 8 bit system. At that time, Jack Tramiel was head of the Atari company. He declined the offer, saying Atari wanted to stop releasing consoles and focus on personal computers instead! So in the end, Nintendo had to distribute the consoles themselves ... In just a few months, they wiped Atari from the throne!
