Zone Warrior

February 12, 2023 by AtariCrypt

Once again, pesky aliens are giving us Earthlings lots of grief. We previously fought them off but they managed to pinch a time machine so are using that to alter history and wreak havoc by taking crucial hostages from each period in an attempt to halt their influence. From the invention of the wheel in prehistoric times to England's King Arthur uniting Britain! And where would any of us be today without Japan and its technical wizardry? Yep, we cannot allow this - the fight is on!

What an accomplishment this game is. Created with such a small team, the result is really amazing. The game oozes creative passion. While the gameplay is really well balanced, it is a tough cookie, very hard from time to time with its moments of sheer frustration. As of level 3, timing becomes key. You will need to practice and learn the levels to complete this game, there are so many bad guys on screen it sometimes gets a bit hard to take.

Graphically, it's also nice on the eyes with well-defined graphics and animation. You really get the feeling that the developers put some thought and love into the game. Remember what I said about the large levels? Well these are wonderful and are very different to each other, they also scroll fairly smooth in all four directions.

Did you know?

The creator of the ST was a guy named Shiraz Shivji, who was also the main engineer behind the Commodore 64.

Latest Comments

Hello! I am the developer of Cops and Robbers Too! and just wanted to add a few additional comments on this game!

It is a fun two player game in which one player plays the Robber and one player plays the Cop. Here are the full instructions:

As the robber, you must rob five banks while avoiding the cop.
To rob a bank, hold the fire button down while driving over a bank
crosswalk. After a few seconds the crosswalk will disappear, and you
have robbed a bank.

As the cop, you must seek and capture the robber before he robs the banks. Use the police radar to determine the robber's location.

Gas stations are found thoughout the city and will need to be
used when your gas runs low. Hold the fire button down and drive
over the crosswalk to get gas, then let go of the joystick. If you
move your joystick or when you are full of gas, the pump will stop.
Running out of gas will cause the car to move slow.

Various places in the city have shortcut roads. these are evident by
their light green color. The robber drives faster over shortcuts than
the cop.

Be carefull of oil slicks and greased railroad tracks, they make you
car slide.

F Faster Speeds up game play.
S Slower Slow down game play.
M Music Toggles music off and on.
Q Quit Quits the game, and returns to Menu.

Editing and Building Cities

When building and editing cities, there are two things to keep in
mind. 1)When building roads and bridges, avoid building them running
lengthwise along a grid line. 2)DO NOT build smaller roads and/or
shortcuts roads next to each other.

Use the joystick to select a position to build. Using the fire
button, adds a block to the city.

G Draws grid showing city block separation.
E Erases grid.
N Chooses nighttime colors.
D Chooses daytime colors.
Q Quit to main menu.
< > Selects character to build with.

To save and load cities select 'S' or 'L' from the main menu. Then,
enter the filename and make sure to enter '.MAP' at the end of the
city name.

Select 'C' from the main menu to create a map. A blank screen
will appear with two white blocks showing the starting positions of
the cop and robber. The cursor will also appear in the middle of the
screen as a white square. All editing features are the same as in the
edit mode.

REMEMBER, when you load or create a city the one in memory will be
erased!

Brume Iron Lord
I remember waiting for this game for months, even years. The pictures in the magazines made me want to play it so much, but we had to be very patient.
And then one day, one of my contacts sent it to me among other games. This is the first game of the lot that I tried and I was really not disappointed.
Iron Lord is really worth it: this game is beautiful, user-friendly, very varied... There is a great adventure behind it all. When time permits, I really should write a full review on this magnificent game.
In short, it is a success on all counts. Love it!

Can't believe I let this pass me by back in the day, incredible graphics, great sound and very playable. One of the best 16bit tennis games.

AtariCrypt D Day
D-Day is a shockingly badly programmed game. Makes my ST perform like an old calculator!

However, there are some going elements to the game and I really liked it. (however, Bomb and Paratrooper are terrible).

Well, must have liked, cos I've bought the game (I'm mad)

Gaming perfection almost as much fun to watch others play as it was to play yourself (was a bit of a spectator sport in our house). We played in hard mode as it was so much fun didn't want complete it too soon. I still vividly recall my incredible run to beat the last boss on my last life.

A fantastic conversion from the arcade to the st, would say its probably the best arcade conversion on the machine and still very enjoyable to play today.

Absolutely loved this back in the day, couldn't believe the graphics seemed like you had triple the usual number of colours on screen. Had great music and whilst gameplay was hard it was still very enjoyable.

MINDTHREAT Marble Madness
Marble Madness for the Atari ST looks beautiful but if you’ve played the NES version before, prepare to be slightly let down.

That’s not to say this conversion isn’t a good one, it’s just not as good as it could have been. The controls do not feel nearly as tight as they do on the NES. Also, there seems to be some oddness to the hit detection of the ball around the edges while guiding down narrow strips. Part of that could lend back to the controls however.

The music is good but the NES remains to be a preference all around. The thought, detail and care that went into the packaging with backstory of this game is probably the coolest I’ve ever seen. In the end, it’s cool to say we got Marble Madness for our Atari computers.
