My first taste of Paul Woakes was through the MDDclone project. The whole Mercenary series is something special, but even the wireframe graphics of Targ play host to that same atmosphere. The minimalism and lack of music helps to create a sort of familiar surrealism. The storyline is bonkers but immensely gratifying. There's an everpresent feeling of 3-dimensional freedom, and the japes you can get up to with your vehicles and inventory may just keep you amused for hours with the engine itself.
